FRIDAY MARCH 5th – SMART Project Space – Amsterdam

with:
Peaking Lights
Indra Dunis and Aaron Coynes founded Peaking Lights after the split of Dunis’ band Numbers.  Peaking Lights are a splendid DIY project that incorporates different styles such as ’70 sci-fi, kraut rock, dub, noise and smooth pop music. Fresh vibes by one of the nicest exponents of a new tradition of American bands that object to the hype machine.

Cotopaxi
Cotopaxi is Johann (aka Fyoelk) and Hannah (aka Moemlien). These two in Amsterdam living Germans have been making the Amsterdam scene thrive again by organizing concerts, art-shows and making books, prints and releasing tapes and cdrs on the Stenze Quo label. Both schooled at a young age to be free with sound they manage to create interesting compositions almost out of thin air, with great sensitivity for dynamics and balance. Their approach is warm and positive resulting in a ‘good times’ feel that will leave a smile in the hearts of the listener.

Lumisokea
Lumisokea plays improvised electronic music: not your usual “I- prepared-30-loops-and-I’m-playing-them-in-random order” kind of electronic live performance, but two people building the music from scratch, in real-time. Reflecting its name (“Lumisokea” means “snowblind” in Finnish), a sense of dark introspection pervades the music, which ranges from minimalist soundsculptures to beat/drone-based, high-intensity walls of sound.
Koen Raad Ecker – laptop and  Andrea Taeggi - roland d-50

City Hands
The Hague’s own City Hands is Mr. Manuel Padding from Helbaard & Silver Ghosts fame, improvising with electronics, hooked-up objects and small percussion. Meditative sonars echo through time where they collide in frantic rhythms that provide a peacefully uplifting soundtrack to a downhill ride through the cold and desolate night.

First band starts 21:00
Entrance: €6.00

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17th – OCCii – Amsterdam

MV & EE is a psychedelic folk duo that combines Indian raga style composition (with increasing authenticity as they become more accomplished with time) with Appalachian folk and post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism. They use Western and Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects such as reverb, delay, and flange.

Head of Wantastiquet is the solo project of Sunburned Hand of the Man’s Paul Labrecque. Who is a household name to lovers of transcendental experimental music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays and composes for the most unlikely instruments in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance and Baroque lute. Van Wissem’s performances exhibit an appropriately virtuosic sense of restraint, even in passages that require his considerable technical powers on the instrument.

First band starts 21:30
Entrance: €7.00

FRIDAY JANUARY 22nd – SMART Project Space – Amsterdam

JASON URICK

The music that Baltimore electronic composer Jason Urick has been creating is difficult to categorize, but in both his previous ensemble Wzt Hearts (pronounced “Wet Hearts”) and on his new solo release Husbands (released in 2009 on Thrill Jockey), his work has been consistently compelling.
Apart from his work as a musician, Urick has been involved in many areas of the Baltimore music scene for almost 10 years.  He’s been one of the primary curators of shows at the Floristree space. He co-curated the Once, Twice:  Festival of Electronic Music and Art and also ran a record store in downtown Baltimore.

ECSTATIC SUNSHINE

Ecstatic Sunshine is an ongoing musical project of Matthew Papich from Baltimore, Maryland.
Throughout the years the essence of Ecstatic Sunshine has been located within Papich’s unique guitar work, however the shifting cast has allowed Ecstatics to spread it’s reach effortlessly into new lands. Echoes of punk, ambient, reggae and techno have floated in and out of Ecstatic’s sound, though never feeling contrived and never supplanting the  energy or vision of  the  original  output.

TWOMBLY
Twombly is Harry Cherrin (saxophones) and Jasper Stadhouders (electric guitar) from Amsterdam.
Pushing their instruments to the limits of sonic possibilities, Twombly spatters heaps of improvised musical paint onto the canvas. Melody and harmony are stretched to the point where they lose any historical or stylistic associations and become pure sonic color to be brushed, scraped, and thrown into space. The resulting soundsculptures take on a life of their own, organically creating their own structure and logic while remaining spontaneous and unpredictable: a true conversation which can only be expressed in this unique shared language.

Starts 21:00!
Entrance: €5.00

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20th  – OCCII – Amsterdam

performances by:
KUUPUU
Kuupuu
Kuupuu is a solo project of Jonna Karanka.  Jonna plays partly improvised spooky boogie with tapes, loops, toys, casios, effects and voices. Her live sets are time travels through unfound galaxies, deserted huts, nightmares, dirty doghouses, sweet cakes and cranberry lakes – letting the melodies find their own ways and settle or unsettle in the whole.

SAMARA LUBELSKI
samara_lubelski1
Songwriter-singer-multi-instrumentalist-improviser-engineer Samara Lubelski is not what anyone could call ‘pigeonholed’ in the climate of contemporary music. She has split her time between Germany, where she works with the psychedelic group Metabolismus, and her Lower East Side home base, playing and recording with a who’s who of the art-punk and freely-improvised folk scenes.

OCCii Amstelveensweg 134,  Amsterdam
20:00 // €6.00

Friday November 6th – SMART Project Space – Amsterdam
Thank You (usa)
The members of Thank You are longtime friends and musical collaborators, working hard to bring to life their wholly original compositions. Musical ideas are introduced and have conversations with one another, each track filled with new articulation and insight. The basics of drums, organ, and guitar build the foundation, but are augmented by whistles, cowbell, hobo harmonica, snappy loops, car horns, and whatever else might be at hand.

Woods (usa)
Lysergic & infectiously bent acidfolk mashed into faust IV style electronically dosed pop grooving, all awash in odd studio effects, motorik percussion, cracked fuzz, unique vocal gush, twisted lyrics, and burning psych jams

Moon & Sun (nl)
Sometimes day, sometimes night. Accompanied by crickets, dogs, sirens, cars, birds, frogs, church bells, bats & horses the recordings by Moon & Sun took place in the garden of the IBB house on Curacao. Constantly guarded, distracted and in league with Bruno and Tequila. Lonesome, gloomy vibrations interlaced with Caribbean tunes into a stream of Apocalypso music.

Doors open: 20:00
Costs: €7.50
