K/W #01: The Je Ne Sais Quoi – Making Love with Time 12″

Stockholm’s The Je Ne Sais Quoi are a band that are constantly redefining and developing themselves and their sound. They started off as a two-piece garage band on their first EP, expanding themselves to a 5 piece on their debut, new wave-esque, album ‘We Make Beginnings’ and took it even further along that line with their last album ‘Rhythm’ where the now 6 piece blended in some glam, weird electronics and even some violins!

This new 12″ mirrors their evolution. The title track, Making Love With Time, is a synth driven, catchy and hasty song with a late 70’s pop feel. The second song, I Read the Signs, is holding back a little bit more, echoing the sound of mid-80’s new wave bands. The last track is a late 80’s acid house-like remix of the song ‘Rhythm’ by Eester Benny.

Songs:
1) Making Love with Time – 3:36
2) I Read the Signs – 3:19
3) Rhythm (Easter Benny Remix) – 3:35

Reviews
“The clock-face silkscreen on this one-sided EP is almost enough to make the record worth purchasing, but the quality of the music seals the deal. The title track continues very much in the punk-funk/disco direction of recent album “Rhythm”, further raising the bar with a squiggly synth bassline, plentiful hand-claps and prominent keyboard arpeggios. Follow-up track “I read the signs” goes for a more syncopated attack and leans far heavier toward the disco side of things. It’s not as immediately catchy as “Making love with time”, but it more than makes up for it by being a far more fully realized composition with many intricate parts and a superb vocal arrangement. Lastly, the Eester Benny remix of “Rhythm” brings it all together, layering complicated harmonies and patterns over an even squigglier, liquid bass track. What else can be said? Three out of three is alright by me.” – Avi Roig on It’s a Trap! Scandinavian Music Journal

“This new 12″ comes on clear vinyl, one-sided pressing with a cool silkscreening on the backside, making it look like a picture-disc! Features the newest recordings by this (now to 6 people expanded) band from Sweden. 2 new songs being somewhere in between synth-driven Pop and New Wave, plus an acid-house like remix of their song “Rhythm” by Eester Benny. Released in a one-time only edition of 500 copies.”X-Mist Records
